En 1957, la empresa manufacturera de equipos deportivos Rawlings, que tiene su asiento en San Luis, Missouri, creó el premio Guante de Oro para reconocer la destacada actuación defensiva de los jugadores de Grandes Ligas, un aspecto del béisbol tan importante como el bateo o el pitcheo.

En su primer año se entregó de manera conjunta entre todos los jugadores de las mayores, pero a partir de 1958 se concede por separado en las ligas Americana y Nacional. Hoy, la designación de los Guantes de Oro se realiza a través de una votación entre managers y coaches de los diferentes equipos, con el aval de la Major League Baseball.

Una leyenda
La magia latina
Brooks Robinson, a quien apodaban ‘la aspiradora’ por sus notables habilidades defensivas en la tercera base, es el jugador que mayor número de Guantes de Oro ha ganado en la historia con 16, todos en la Americana con los Orioles de Baltimore. Los obtuvo de manera consecutiva entre 1960 y 1975.

En 1957, el cubano Orestes ‘Minnie’ Miñoso fue el primer latinoamericano en ganar el Guante de Oro, cuando lo consiguió como jugador del leftfield con los Indios de Cleveland. Ese fue el primero de los tres que recibió en su carrera como pelotero de ligas mayores.

El latino con más distinciones de este tipo es el receptor puertorriqueño Iván Rodríguez, quien se anexó todos sus 13 Guantes de Oro en la Americana, en cuyo circuito también logró el premio Jugador Más Valioso, en 1999. Siguen su paisano Roberto Alomar (10), y los venezolanos Omar Vizquel (9 de sus 11 en esta liga) y Luis Aparicio (9).
